So the sinkhole can eat that too?

The sinkhole would not have been very serious in the first place had one been properly laid, most likely.

Being properly laid makes everything better, I find.

But where is the drama when the sinkhole is out of the equation. Then this just becomes a boring room full of Corvettes that need to be driven.

Nope. The issue appears to have been caused by drainage issues, so it would likely have collapsed under a basement as well.

This part of Kentucky has been described as having a series of underground caverns and caves which is a factor in this incident. Doesn't matter what you put on top of the soil in my uneducated opinion.

It has a foundation... it was just a slab foundation that's now in the sinkhole. They would have done proper survey work when the building was put up that determined they wouldn't need to drop piers to bedrock. And that's not usually done unless you're building something really big and tall. The slab was determined to be fine for what was underneath, but that obviously changed quite a bit over the years.

Now, if the builders didn't do proper survey work, then let the lawsuits fly.

"We finally moved!"
-Museum 'Vettes

Really, though, these cars might as well have no drivetrains. They have done more for GM and the museum than any other Corvettes have—a little-known museum in a little-known place gets crazy publicity, while GM looks like a cool company, coming to the rescue by replacing these things with new corvettes and getting positive media attention (aka replacing all but three parts on each car). Only the enthusiasts lose out, although these cars would never put a smile on any of their faces anyways.

Pro tips #2:

Neumann Smith and Associates, of Southfield, Michigan, designed the museum.

Apparently the cause of this was both a lack of proper survey work before laying the foundation of the building (the foundation was swallowed by the sinkhole) and drainage.

Not sure what would've happened if there were a basement or a thicker foundation...Could've been more or less carnage...who knows...

Ah, good to know. It just seemed like a typical steel-frame style building, which usually don't have much of a foundation. Guess I should tone down the out-of-ass talking.

No worries, I do it all the time!

From the photos it does look like the floor was just slapped on the ground, but there's the top, leveling concrete that you see hanging around the edges, but there was also the thick, main slab under that. Looks like most of it was swallowed up, but you can see a chunk of it under the ZR-1 and it's pretty thick.

Well, I was born in Michigan and now live in Kentucky. I don't know where my loyalties lie on this one.

It's a lot easier said than done. Even with a degree in civil engineering or architecture you can do a dozen soil borings on a site and hit "good" soil with each one never knowing what you are really building on. There's a lot more to it than the soil too, water does crazy stuff under the surface of the ground.

There are surprisingly many terms for people from Michigan, although none really sound that good.

Protip: Foundations go under load bearing walls and load bearing pillars, not under the floor of a building. In this diagram the foundation is being called the footer.
